'Future' is impressive

I think it is a good idea to speak English, when addressing the graduates of Academie Minerva. There are a few hundred people around the old factory 'De Toekomst' in Scheemda. The scene of their graduation-exposition. Its title: 'Future'.

De Toekomst in Scheemda

Here is the paradox: This building is called ‘De Toekomst’ (The Future). But it is the future of the past. The future of our ancestors. The building was constructed 120 years ago. In the middle of the industrial revolution. The sky was the limit. The future was bright and shining. But when we look at the building now, we see a monument of the past. Created by people from the past.

Their dreams gave way to the facts.

Their dreams gave way to the facts. The bright future developed into a reality that was not only inspiring. And after ‘The future’ of our ancestors, a next, a further future developed. Our future. When this building was constructed and its future was still bright, the Groningen Art Academy already was a century old. Contributing to an attractive cultural climate. Giving young artists a proper education. Creating the conditions for famous groups of artists, like ‘De Ploeg’ to create innovative forms of art. Inspired by the connection between the city and the province of Groningen.

I think it’s inspiring that the Arts Academy exists 225 years, next year, and moves to the region again, literally. To Scheemda. To ‘De Toekomst’.

Exciting

Is there a better way to show everyone what you can do as a graduate, than to shine at an exhibition called ‘Future’? And this industrial monument, ‘De Toekomst’ is the perfect stage. One cannot underline more that the future begins now. And here. Today. An exhibition. It is exciting, but terrifying. Hearing what other people think of your work. People you admire. People you don’t know... They all judge your work.

After your graduation another reality starts. Your future will become the present. Things will be scary. Like driving a car with your brand new driving license. For the first time with no teacher from the driving school by your side. From now on you will be working without teachers. And without your fellow students, who say what they like and what they don't like. You already developed courage and guts. They will grow in the future.

your current way of life is over

And you will need them. For from now on, it all has to come from within - the inspiration, the hard work and the determination not to be easily satisfied. Your life at Minerva already demanded that from you to some extent. And that prepared you for the future that starts today. Here. In ‘De Toekomst’.

You work in a profession in which you really have to do it yourself. Which sometimes works best when you are alone. And other times, when you are with others. Boosting each other’s confidence as a team. Whatever may be the case, you are now closing the door on one chapter of your life. The journey called ‘training’ has reached its destination. And with it, a part of your current way of life is over.

International

Scheemda is not far for Minerva. Because Minerva reaches out to the whole world. To call Minerva an international course is no exaggeration. You really do come from all over the world. From Ukraine and Russian Siberia to South Korea and Peru. South America is well represented, as is China, India, eastern and southern Europe, and the USA. To be able to study together, is in a way, bringing the world together. And that is not only an inspiration for arts. It is also an inspiration for us all.

You certainly remember your first day at Minerva. Your stay in Groningen was still ahead. All of it was future. No one could imagine the impact of Covid. Or of the invasion of Ukraine.

say without hesitation: 'Go to Groningen'

Your dreams too gave way to the facts. The bright future developed into reality that was not only bright. And after ‘The future’ of your start in Groningen, a next, a further future developed. Your future. Your future as an artist. Your future as an ambassador for Groningen.

Because hopefully you can look back on a great time in Groningen. I already see some of you with tears in their eyes, thinking that they will soon leave the city behind them. A farewell to the clouds, the meadows, the Wad. Forum, the Martinitoren, the Vismarkt. Unlimited socialising, late nights with no end. Pubs that never close. King's Day, Bommen Berend. A bike ride to Garnwerd, drinking beer on a terrace and back again. Canoeing on the Diepenring or the Reitdiep.
I hope you will take away with you some golden memories of Groningen. If someone asks your advice on where to study, I hope you will say without hesitation: 'Go to Groningen'. And for now: have fun at this beautiful and impressive exhibition. Your exhibition. Your hard work. Your party!
